Missouri Puppy Mill Dogs Need Rescued - Foster Homes -Transportation

I found this on facebook, if you are on facebook go to angels for animals network to see this post:  This is a direct quote:

Brenda said they have tons of cocker spaniels needing rescue still... See More…. I spoke for 5 of the jacks.. she has 3 more she wants me to take as well… but Lordy.. with no fosters lined up PLUS vetting of the 5 I spoke for is gonna kill me…. But I really would love to save all 8 jacks…. Ugh… Kristy

Here is the body of the original email:

These HUGE list 98 breeders dogs are in need of RESCUES. They have been given their freedom!! However, many have already been pts and more will be pts sleep if not rescued.
Please when looking at this list, do consider taking an older one and not just the younger ones. It will be the older ones that get pts first by the breeders. We don’t want to leave any behind!!
We have transport to MN/WI and N. IL. We do not have tranport set up for the east or west coast.

If you can help with transport or sponsoring or donating crates, please contact me at westhancockk9@mchsi.com

Permission to crosspost and post to facebook.

Bichon, Bichon Frise, Adoption and Grooming

I Have Unlimited Bandwidth And A Big Computer
I know most of you are saying so what.  Well with ATT you don't have unlimited bandwidth and with hughes you get shut down if you use too much in one day.  You can use all you want between 3 am and 6 am, isn't that sweet?  Anyway my connection may not stay on for long periods but I am not limited in what I watch.  I was going to work on taxes and my ongoing battle with UPS but......
Here's an old Animal Planet Video of Bichons, great for anyone to watch who is considering getting one.  And getting their hair to look like that?  The curly sort of dreadlocky thing is easy.  The fluff like a plush carpet.  Not so easy.  Otherwise they are perfect.

The next video is by BBird there are a bunch more on youtube by her.  Groom Studio is the name.  She was my first inspiration and source of information for correctly grooming a bichon.  Here's a link to her website and scissoring a bichon head.  As I have an insistent little head pushing up on my arm because I won't help him on my lap.  Sort of like a bull  in miniature, a bull crossed with a bulldozer?

This is Buttons.  Her family gave her to a kill shelter because they thought she was too old.  She may have 10 more years to live, she is only 10 now and bichons are very healthy long lived dogs.  She is in Deleware now.
Go here to ask about her.
Now we have Gidget.  She is 5 months.  If you REALLY want an energetic bichon this is it.  It seems her family turned her back  in because she was just too energetic for them.  Puppies are energetic but she is like high maintenance, that said you will have a wonderful companion when she settles down.  SHE   MUST HAVE TRAINING.  Gidget is in PA.

Of course there are many more pets on petfinder.com.  If you are thinking of buying a dog, cat, or another animal please just browse, adoption may be the way to go for you and it rescues some animal from a lonely life.

A Wonderful Site For Animal Transport And Rescue

The name of this site is Operation Roger. From what I can gather it's a rescue operation that also transports animals free of cost for non profit animal rescue groups etc. From what I can gather the name comes from Roger a Toy Manchester Terrier who was a rescue. There is a small animal rescue listing page, rescue stories etc. Check out these good Samaritans and what they do.
This website was brought to my attention because Arrow Trucking in Tulsa Oklahoma went out of business. (I hate to go on ad nauseum but I'm truly talented @ it) Not only did they go out of business Arrow Trucking left it's drivers stranded out on the road with no fuel money. Damlier Finance is repossessing the trucks and from what I gather they are giving part of the drivers bus fare home. The problem? You can only take so much with you on a bus. We've only been in this truck for a couple months out on the road this time but I have probably $100 worth of groceries, 6 big suitcases, extra shoes and coats for both of us, laptop obviously, bedding, plus the usual frig, tv, microwave, some even have port a potties or carry small bar-b que grills and lawn chairs. This isn't going on a bus and no one is paying to get it home except for the truck drivers whose last paycheck and maybe the one before that one from Arrow bounced. Most ex-Arrow drivers are just abandoning their gear which is sad. What makes it doubly tragic is the season and probably not being paid for work done or even in some cases not having insurance the company was supposed to be paying for.

BUT to get to the point of my post what about the pets these drivers had? I don't know if they were allowed pets or not but if they were I'm sure there are several drivers stranded with pets since I know truck drivers and usually if they want a pet they put it in the truck regardless.

Topix suggested Operation Roger as a possible solution for these ex-Arrow drivers. I hope it is working out for everyone.

I know we would have to rent a car to get home if this situation arose with us but we own our own truck but they do break. Also I've heard of so many dogs lost @ truck stops and by travelers, this is why Dispatch is chipped and I try to keep his id on him too @ all times.

Anyway check out these kind souls @ operation Roger and what they do for animal rescue.
And I"ve been doing well @ posting (not so well on reading and commenting) but Happy Holidays to all once again, we might have a white Christmas in the midwest but we will be home before that!!!

Sign Petition For Animal Shelters, Philadelphia Eagles To Match Vic's Salary To Shelters?

OK, heres the deal. Michael Vic is going to play for the Philadelphia Eagles right? (You'd have to be living under a rock to not know that) The political action group DogPac is asking the Philadelphia Eagles to match Michael Vic's salary in donations to local animal shelters. 6.6 million dollars over two years would go pretty far toward animal shelters I think. I learned about this from Tanks Blog and from Loving For A Living. The site for to send emails and sign the petition (also donate if you wish) is HERE.

For those of you who know how longwinded I can get this will amaze you. This is my email to the Philadelphia Eagles Owner or rather what I added onto their email.

Basically it says below, hey dude, do what is fair, they guy screwed up, you hired him back, the animals that he harmed and others need a second chance too. Here's your chance.

Take a little time, help out our animal shelters, our dog and cat friends (children) in these tough times. Go sign the petition, email, donate or just donate to your local shelter or consider a dog for adoption or a cat?

I won't be on much for awhile, I am migrating to animalsthatgivepause.com but I have like real work to do too (paperwork and accounting, bah humbug) and I'm trying to follow blogs a little too, cook, and clean, and all that dull nasty stuff.

Obama Dog Bo

Well the votes are in and the Portuguese Water Dog won. I do think it's rather appropriate Bo came from President Kennedy's brother Teddy since Obama has been compared to JFK in so many ways. I think it's also neat that Portuguese Water Dogs are being used for genetic study. There are only about 1000 of these dogs in the world, the breed started from 30 core dogs and the breeders especially in the United States have always tried to breed out deformities and any disease that may crop up so the bloodlines are easily traced. PWD are also good genetic subjects because they are small and large and different colors. Geneticists studying these dogs have isolated a gene that may cause dogs to be small which I think is fascinating. The story on how the PWD helps genetics research is summarized here in the La Times.

Bo is also a rescue which is what President Obama wanted, it seems he had a previous family that just didn't quite mesh with him or something. So it all turned out good except Bo is supposedly banned from President Obama's bed. That is probably true for now, wonder if it will stick? I'm sure Bo will never know that he is probably one of the most famous dogs in the world, he will just think this is the way life should be like my little white rat (OK he's fluffy and looks more like a giant q tip than a rat but I call him my white rat) thinks, he doesn't think he's spoiled, this is just how life should be!

I wonder if the Obama's will stop @ one dog? Bo might get lonely? President Obama seems to be plenty smitten with this dog considering it was a present for his children? Bo is truly and animal that gives pause and probably one that will give paws too, pun intended.

Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog for the Obama's?

OK, I admit I posted this in January the first time but since the Obama's haven't gotten a dog yet ( OK, he's been sort of busy with GM and those conferences in London and Iran and all and she's been busy hugging the Queen and denying pregnancy rumors, I LIKE Michelle OK! ) but I'm dying to find out what they do choose, I still think the labradoodle looks like a lanky bichon? But there are those who say labradoodle isn't a breed so they should stick to the Portuguese Water Dog? What's your opinion?

Link to the white Labradoodle puppy breeder Copper Canyon Labradoodles.

To me the labradoodle looks like a lanky bichon but maybe I am just a little touched about bichons?

The other choice is a Portuguese Water Dog, I think this is Teddy Kennedy's choice? The picture above is from the American Kennel Club, don't want to get into trouble.

They both seem like nice dogs. Good rambunctious dogs. Not foo foo dogs like Obama said he didn't want.

OK, we have a foo foo dog but he's just really cute and cuddly, let him think something is attacking mama and he turns into the tazmanian devil. One night I heard Skeeter the terrier fussing out by the bar-b-que grill. Seems a possum had made it's way under the grill, opossums are not known for their speed or being particulary ferocious so I decided I either had to get it out of there or kill it to make Skeeter shut up. I got a shovel and managed to get le possum on it and drag it out from under the grill. Dispatch wasn't very old, less than a year but when the possum came out and snarled he threw himself on it teeth barred and growling because le possum was coming toward beloved mama. Well duh, if I have a shovel and am pulling le possum toward me it's going to get closer. Opossum left the shovel and the yard with a bouncy white butt in close pursuit and a black slow butt behind that (Skeeter).
Foo foo dog also shows no mercy when confronted with strange dogs in his yard. I've seen him chase huge hounds off and a blue heeler. I'm standing there actually calling the blue heeler and Dispatch catches sight of him and it's bar the door Katie. A little white cotton fluff ball heading down the hill in hot pursuit of a VERY scared blue heeler. Just didn't make sense to me, maybe the blue heeler thought the q-tips had gone mad or it was a ghost?

Anyway all the best of luck to the Obama's with their puppy.

And if you are considering adopting go here for a list of dogs just waiting to be glad to see you when you walk in the door. There was an article in People I believe that said pets turned into shelters are on the rise but adoptions are also on the rise. Think about it. You could have a dog beside you whining to go out to his cat friends so he can chase them like I do?

Kosovo Seargeants Give Their Boys Surprise Puppies

Here's the link.

The picture above is the two puppies before the family got there.

A husband and wife who are Sergeants in the National Guard recently returned from Kosovo. The father saw a litter of 8 lab puppies on petfinder @ the Stover Animal Shelter and emailed them about keeping two of the puppies for their boys, who are 10, 6, and 5. The boys had NO idea what was going on when they went to Stover. It's all in the article. This animal shelter is my pet charity, pun intended. Carol Sue Wiegel mentioned in the article is the local real estate agent and her primary volunteer is one of my oldest friends, Brenda Cook, she emailed this to me:

About 2 months ago a army guy e-mailed us from Kosovo. He had seen our pets on petfinder, and was interested in some lab pups we had ( 8 ) of them. He has 3 little boys and had promised them a dog when he returned, he really wanted 2 of them but wanted us to keep 2 for him for 2 months until he returned. Well of course we did and he got home last Tuesday, and came for the pups this Monday, his boys new nothing about this, it was a surprise for them. He brought his family down and you should of seen the look on those kids faces they are 10, 7 and 5, they went crazy!! they named thier dogs Scarlett and Duke. The Sedalia paper was there and so was KRCG tv Jefferson City. Great Press and did a good thing too!

I LOVE stories like this.

Valentines Day for Dogs

The story of a dog named Darby, link below.

http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/feb1209.html

Ok, we have valentines for people why not dogs? I am extremely prejudiced I know because I own a bichon and a lab but today with the economy the way it is and all why not do something truly loving for yourself, your family, and one of our furry friends. Think about adopting a dog.
You can go here, for a bichon or you can type in your breed preference and zip code on the left hand side to see other breeds. (Such as Labradors?)

Temperament Testing for Dogs

American Temperament Test with breed statistics.

Temperament testing for dogs for you to do yourself.

Testing suggestions from Paw Rescue.

To be honest I heard about the first one on the radio this morning on the way to work @ the unholy hour of 6 am and googled the others. Bichons didn't do so good, actually little dogs didn't do so good, lab's have very good temperaments. If you have a dog you spend lots of time with you probably can do the temperament testing in your head and not bother leaving the computer. The tests from Paw Rescue give you clues what to look for in a rescue or shelter dog. My bichon gives the sort of a growl but I'm not really growling when I tell him he can't get up in the night and bark with the other dogs. I can turn him over and put my hands on his neck (OK he rolls over and I play like I'm choking him and he makes this ahhh ahhh noise but he loves it), he hates to be held on his back though but we are working on it, those are some of the things the tests ask. My Bichon would flunk the person running by or riding a bike by, he LOVES to chase things like that.

What else is new? It snowed and sleeted last week, got way behind with everything because it took me forever to get to work and back. We will say that is the excuse for the infrequent postings. The dog is "telling" me I need to do something now, must go! Ahhh we had a playing howling session, he is satisfied for the moment. Wonder what that says about his temperament and mine?

My dog is spoiled Part III

This is a picture of dis and mittens, they had a long standing feud, the big cats we had might have made Dis want to chase cats more? This was another unfortunate teenage picture of dis, I cut his hair and obviously he wouldn't sit still for that or being brushed!

Getting tired of this yet? I've never written this all down yet and feel I must finish. Plus it gives me blogging material I can put on during the week when I'm @ work and the white fuzzy one is home by himself. Ok, he's not always by himself, he's got family going by and stopping in all the time but he says he's terribly lonely.

And BTW little white foo foo dog, fireworks, guns and thunderstorms, don't bother him in the least. Ok if the thunder shakes the house or camper when we lived in one in MS he would move to my lap but that was about it. I think he actually likes the commercials for Disney World with the fireworks because he always watches them, or maybe he's thinking he can go there and chase mice on his birthday, you get in for free on your birthday you know? The lab and the terrier are terrified by any and all of the above, thunder isn't so bad for the lab but fireworks do him in and they both go the opposite direction if there is a gun being fired.

Dispatch has only been hurt or sick three times and they all show how spoiled he is. The first time he was only a few months old, it was almost Christmas and I had gone to California MO to distribute gifts to people we did business with, my husband was already over there in another truck. It had been a long long pickup ride but Dispatch hadn't acted upset or like he had to go potty, it had only been like an hour since he'd been out, my husband had bought this new pickup the February before, his pride and joy, 2002 Silverado with cloth seats, that's important, this truck was CLEAN. I brought my husband lunch from Mickey D's and told him it was in the truck to go out and we would eat it. He gets out there and I follow him, he slams the door after grabbing the food which thankfully was in a different seat from the dog. Evidently the dog had gotten sick or gone potty all over the new pickup, I didn't think a small dog could produce so much whatever it was, it was ALL OVER. I think he was sick but I had to drive 30 miles home with him and that stink, I have a strong stomach but it was all I could do not to get sick myself, he was so upset because I wouldn't let him touch me and he finally crawled over by the other door and laid down facing away from me. I can't remember whether I cleaned the dog or the pickup first but neither one was fun. Then the dog curled up beside the heater in his bed and let me wrap him up so I'm pretty sure he was feeling horrible, he slept for hours, perked up a little before bedtime and was OK the next day. I knew my husband had accepted the dog when he asked about the dog BEFORE he asked about the pickup when he called later that evening. I did get the pickup clean and after a month or so it didn't stink like upholstery cleaner anymore.

The second time dis was sick he got neutered. I was a baby about it and Dispatch was like over 2 when we finally got it done. I really wanted little Dispatches but knew that was silly. The vet INSISTED on keeping him overnight, I told him that wasn't a good idea, Dispatch had never been away from me overnight but once when we our nephew was killed in a car accident and then we left Dis @ home and a friend came in and let him out and fed him but he was @ home. The vet insisted, I gave in because Drs know best right? It's the next morning, my husband stays home later than he should from a trip to IA because he wanted to go with me to the vet to get the dog. I'd called the evening before all is fine, the vet calls back in the morning after he
goes and checks on Dispatch and tells me to wait till late late morning. Seems Dispatch was FINE when he left him for the night. But somehow during the night (or probably all night) Dispatch tried to escape from a stainless steel crate with NO sharp edges. He pawed and pawed till his feet were bloody, the vet himself gave him a bath and apologized all over himself, I guess he looked horrible when he went in in the morning and scared the vet, he was like totally bloody. He said if he wanted to keep him again remind him of what happened. I got to the vets and I hear this barking and whining all at once sounds like 3 dogs, it's Dispatch who is VERY glad to see me despite his operation.

The last time he was sick it was my fault. We were in MS in early 2007, everyone around had a dog and had gotten new puppies and it's a warm southern climate, that means fleas. I tried everything to get rid of them on Dispatch, he'd had frontline before like once a summer which seemed to take care of them so I went and got some from the vet again. Don't know if it was what I'd put on him before (I bathed him before the frontline) or a bad reaction which I had read about after all this happened but all of a sudden one morning he was like lethargic just barely raised his head when I would get out of the car, I had to carry him to the car that morning which was NOT like him. I don't remember if I'd put on the frontline the night before or gotten it that morning. Called the vet and she told me to rush him home and give him a bath, I gave him 2 or three baths, he didn't mind. When we were in the car running errands he would look up when I would get out but that was it, no barking or whining, didn't even want to stand up. The night was horrible, his breathing was fast and shallow and he was restless but didn't want to do anything but lay by my head. I didn't want to disturb my husband so I laid on the living room floor with Dispatch on a pallet all night. He made it obviously but it scared me horribly and I will never put frontline on him again. It took like 2 or 3 days for him to be bouncy again and completely back to normal, it was like a child was sick.
So that is the story of our spoiled rotten little dog. As you can see he can be useful, actually I painted the rose and sold it on ebay, Dispatch wouldn't leave me alone while I was trying to take the picture so I said Ok earn your keep, roll over, then I put the picture on him and took the photo. The picture is small they are called aceos, I used to sell them before the economy went south and I had to get a "real" job. LOL

Am I goofy over the dog, yes. Is he goofy over me? yes. Do pets enrich your life whether they are fuzzy or short haired, bark or meow, or even have scales or feather? Yes Yes Yes. Remember if you are thinking about getting a new pet get one you can take care of, and PLEASE think about adopting a rescue pet.
