If I Could, This is What I Would Do With My Life

The people @ Seer Farms take pets and board them for individuals or families who cannot afford regular boarding fees and who have lost their homes, can't find pet friendly housing, or just need temporary boarding for their pets because of the economy or life changes.  This is a wonderful effort and actually sounds like it might be a workable charity idea?  Since my husband calls me Ellie Maye Clampett anyway and insists we only have one little dog @ a time (we can have a big dog too but we haven't found the perfect one, anyone have a giant bichon?  LOL) I can't do this but it's a GREAT idea for someone who is looking to channel a love of animals into a worthwhile endeavor.  Seer Farms was recently featured in a USA Today article,  the article is an excellent read about a couple on the way to deliver their first child looking for pet boarding.....

Once again one of my favorite rescues.....smallpawsrescue.org has a new bichon finder.....OK, pet finder, Pets911.  Pretty cool huh?  I found Ice close to my home,

OK not ice a Bichon puppy named Ice who was turned in to the shelter from a commercial breeder because he was TOO BIG!  4.5 lb and he was born 7/12/10, now I'm not too sure what Dispatch (my bichon) was when he was that old but I'm pretty sure it was over 4.5 lb.  In other words this dog may weigh 25 lb when grown, but that is really stretching it.  Dispatch used to weigh 17 and he is like at the top of the size for show bichons....he's a mutt though.  Anyway Ice is available for Adoption from Thistle Hills Rescue, in Birch Tree, MO.

New York City Bichon Needs Adoption Now!

See this wee tiny baby?  He needs adopted and he needs adopted NOW and I'm in TX and can't do anything about it.  If you knew the hour or two we spent playing with our Bichon Dispatch whom we have had for 7 years and whom growls @ us when we pet him with our feet or play growls sometimes....he's a little white dog with dull teeth.  Anyway euthanizing a bichon is like euthanizing a rabbit because it kicks when you pick it up, basically not much difference.  Or drowning a kitten because it scratched you.  Kittens scratch.  PLUS this dog has shown signs of fear but not agression!!!!  Even if the dog is aggressive it just needs some training.  PLEASE??????
This is what it said on facebook where I got this:
Scheduled to be Euthanized Tomorrow, July 30, 2010 Beyond tomorrow, this dog will no longer be around! PLEASE Call to Foster or Adopt SNOWBALL!!! "Snowball" A867130 – 5 yr. neutered Bichon Frise. Sentiment, Memory, Family, and Dogs

I was going to clean off my chest of drawers the other day, it's from an old waterfall set of furniture, I seem to have had this chest of drawers most of my life, (maybe that's why I'm so enchanted by new furniture?).  I thought what do I take down?  The tennis balls the dog trys to bring to bed once in awhile and I have to hide by putting them up high.  The white stuffed dog?  Bath and Body Works had these for sale in Feb 2004, Dispatch the bichon was a little over 6 months old.  The dog keeps dragging the tiny teddy bear to bed that lies beside the dog to bed with us too.   The picture frame and picture?  My daughters with an early Missouri version of Bichons (actually poodle and small sheltie/border collie mixes), the picture was taken in the early 80s if not 1980.  So I dusted the chest of drawers, the bracelet the older daughter gave me lays on top and my only pair of earrings I like.  The bracelet says - sometimes the best things in life are often unseen, a moment of serenity, a feeling of security, all this and more you've given to me.  The dresser scarf was my mothers, I think it's silk, not sure it's supposed to be a dresser scarf but I latched onto it not long after I was born and declared it mine.....The lamp?  The little blond girl in the picture broke the globe once when throwing balls in the house, she has heard about it ever since so I don't think she throws balls in the house anymore....The candle came from Ft. Lauderdale when we lived in the tiny camper cleaning up after Wilma....
I left everything exactly as it was.

Robeson County Animal Shelter In North Carolina Euthanized Animals Without Allowing Adoption!!!

Link to Article about a North Carolina's seemingly senseless and cruel euthanasia policy.

Quotes:
The suit alleges that Bass euthanized a dog in April after Barrett told him she planned to adopt it. Barrett was waiting in the parking lot when Bass killed the dog, and Bass knew she was there, the suit claims. Other animal rescue groups signed on to the suit make similar allegations.

In 2009, the rural shelter took in more than 5,100 stray cats and dogs, according to county records. Of those, more than 4,500 of the animals - roughly 88 percent - were euthanized.

The shelter's hold policy doesn't require a window for pet adoptions. After giving owners 120 hours to claim a lost pet, the animals can be put down without ever being up for adoption. The Robeson County shelter also will not release the animals to foster homes during the hold period, even though a 2009 state law allows for such an arrangement, Gerber said.

In 2001, animal advocates released an undercover video showing shelter workers heart-sticking dogs and cats without giving them anesthesia. The method is said to be extremely painful if the animal is not sedated. Various versions of the video have attracted hundreds of thousands of online views in recent months and seemed to galvanize animal rights activists from across the nation.

Bass, the shelter's manager for eight years, has received the brunt of the criticism. Bass has said that animal advocates have left phone messages threatening to kill him. Others have posted Facebook messages calling him a murderer.
Joan E. Loza Mobry of Wisconsin has led the online charge against Bass. She said in a phone interview Friday that her "life mission" is to see Bass put in prison. Loza Mobry said she'll have to pursue her goal from afar.
"I have to," she said, "because if I ever came face to face with Jeff Bass, I would probably do something I would go to prison for."

End Quote

If these accusations are true these people at the shelter make me ashamed to be the same species as they are.  I don't think I can make that any clearer.

The Roebson County Animal Shelter lists animals on Petfinder.   At the present time there are 59 animals listed for adoption.  This is AFTER they supposedly cleaned up their act.  If 2010 is like 2009 that's 485 animals a month.  Perhaps a great deal have been adopted and rescued by their owners but with their former policies that seems unlikely?  So we are safe in saying they have needlessly put 1000 animals to death this year?  What got me about the whole deal is they seemed to work AGAINST people adopting animals, they would rather kill them.

Bichon, Bichon Frise, Adoption and Grooming

I Have Unlimited Bandwidth And A Big Computer
I know most of you are saying so what.  Well with ATT you don't have unlimited bandwidth and with hughes you get shut down if you use too much in one day.  You can use all you want between 3 am and 6 am, isn't that sweet?  Anyway my connection may not stay on for long periods but I am not limited in what I watch.  I was going to work on taxes and my ongoing battle with UPS but......
Here's an old Animal Planet Video of Bichons, great for anyone to watch who is considering getting one.  And getting their hair to look like that?  The curly sort of dreadlocky thing is easy.  The fluff like a plush carpet.  Not so easy.  Otherwise they are perfect.

The next video is by BBird there are a bunch more on youtube by her.  Groom Studio is the name.  She was my first inspiration and source of information for correctly grooming a bichon.  Here's a link to her website and scissoring a bichon head.  As I have an insistent little head pushing up on my arm because I won't help him on my lap.  Sort of like a bull  in miniature, a bull crossed with a bulldozer?

This is Buttons.  Her family gave her to a kill shelter because they thought she was too old.  She may have 10 more years to live, she is only 10 now and bichons are very healthy long lived dogs.  She is in Deleware now.
Go here to ask about her.
Now we have Gidget.  She is 5 months.  If you REALLY want an energetic bichon this is it.  It seems her family turned her back  in because she was just too energetic for them.  Puppies are energetic but she is like high maintenance, that said you will have a wonderful companion when she settles down.  SHE   MUST HAVE TRAINING.  Gidget is in PA.

Of course there are many more pets on petfinder.com.  If you are thinking of buying a dog, cat, or another animal please just browse, adoption may be the way to go for you and it rescues some animal from a lonely life.

Kids VS Dog or Who Is More Jealous?

I think these pictures were taken in January or February of 2005 which would make Kaylin (granddaughter) almost 2 and Dispatch 1 1/2, isn't Kaylin a doll, she still is and not because she is the child of the one the other kids call my favorite (my favorite is supposedly my oldest stepson whom the other kids say can do no wrong in my eyes, @ that point I tell them I've disliked them all equally @ times). Anyway this is back when we thought Dispatch was a poodle which is another story, thus the horrible haircut. That and my oldest daughter decided to try her hand @ grooming him.

Dispatch (the dog in the picture a bichon and maybe poodle) was pretty good with the grandkids, didn't trust them but there was good reason. They did strange things to him. He did bite another granddaughter but she was teasing him taking food away from him and then giving it back, he learned better. Also Dispatch learned that if I had the camera out he had to be in the picture. He likes our children, loves some but that's another story.
Our children are all horribly jealous of the dog except for the two youngest who are both blond and Christy and Christi respectively, that's what happens when you have a blended family, I can't say Judy is jealous either but she is the youngest of my husbands two oldest daughters, so it's mostly the oldest kids that are jealous? My husband had a 10 year gap in between his two sets of kids so the respective oldest 3 of each family are the worst about not liking the dog. They say we spoil him horribly and they were never spoiled like that. One did admit ONCE that I must have spoiled the kids and they not known it considering how much I spoil the dog. She has @ last count 7 dogs with separate schedules because some of them fight so I don't know about me spoiling MY dog? We got Dispatch when the youngest child we had living with us was barely out of high school. Anyway the kids were basically gone from home and we had this foo foo dog that they were jealous of. We aren't talking babies here, they are in their 20s and 30s and professionals for the most part. But they don't want to h
ear about the dog, they grimace when we have to go home because the dog is there, they pass over the dog pictures, ...........they call him horrors, that stupid mutt?

For an example my oldest daughter who is really a loving caring upstanding person (she's the school nurse, has 4 kids, and a sunbeam group @ church) and I were talking the other day. I told her I had the new video of Dispatch "talking" on youtube and she said she could care less?

We went on a trip to the Florida Keys one Christmas eve when we were in Ft Lauderdale took my youngest daughter and my husbands youngest son and of course Dispatch too, it's referred to sometimes as the trip from hell because they had to ride in the back seat of the pickup with Dispatch who wanted his Mommy and Daddy in the FRONT seat the whole time. We went to the dog beach down there BTW, there and Dairy Queen, only two times we stopped except some state park with an old bridge and lots of shells. And yes the dog got ice cream @ Dairy Queen. BUT I did try to make the dog behave and not be like attached to me the whole trip.

So in short I guess the dog was our answer to the empty nest syndrome (what empty nest, they kept trying to come back!) and the kids didn't like what they viewed as a stupid replacement. And of course when we got married most of them were WAY too old to sleep with us (5-21 years old) but the dog gets to sleep with us, and go everywhere with us, and I carry him when he wants carried, and play when he wants to play (sometimes). I think the worst is if I talk baby talk to him and they say I never talked that nice to them. AND if they had came in from outside and jumped on the furniture with wet feet they would have been severely punished and the dog isn't, and he gets to sit on my lap when I watch tv or "daddies" lap. There are myriad more reasons why they think he is spoiled. Probably one of them is I blog about him and animals and not children but I don't think they want so much of their lives and habits exposed as Dispatches have been?

Anyway the kids are jealous of Dispatch. My husbands cousin has 3 girls the same age as some of our kids. They didn't have a dog inside when the kids were growing up either. The girls left home and voila, the parents get a dog. They have a NEW house in town, nice house and they get a terrier. Their girls tell me the dog eats steak and gets towels warmed up for him but I'm not sure that's all true. They say you have to be careful when you have a new baby when you have a pet already established in the home but no one ever warns about getting a new pet when you have children who are already established in the home?

Small Paws, Bonded Pair Of Bichon Frise For Foster Or Adoption

Courtesy Of Small Paws Rescue

We still need a foster home for this bonded pair. They are being boarded in Tulsa. They are darling boys from an owner surrender to a kill shelter. We can fly them to you for foster care and we are also accepting adoption applications as well. There will be a two-for-one- adoption fee for them both!

Meet Schotzy and Sassy! They are both darling and are a bonded pair. They may be siblings. They were surrendered to a kill shelter in MO.
Got room for two more?? How to Become a Much Needed Small Paws® Rescue Foster Parent! Fill Out an Online Adoption Application!
Small Paws Rescue

This is TC now.....help me keep my marriage, get these dogs before I do. I can't judge other people but to surrender these two to a kill shelter makes me ill. Thank goodness they will be fostered or adopted now..... hopefully. Check out their other bichons and mixes and if you can't do anything else donate to them or your local animal shelter. I've got two big garbage sacks of clothes to go to our thrift shop that is ran by the local animal shelter. Every little bit helps. I'm serious, I'm going home soon and these two would make wonderful playmates for Dispatch but he would have no Daddy or says Daddy so SAVE ME FROM MYSELF....please?
Just think, if you adopted these two you could have TWO blogs about bichons..... JK, I have two animal blogs and only one bichon.....it is possible to live without a bichon but you just feel sooooo much better with a little teddy bear face staring @ you sleepily in the morning with one eye cracked open.

Kosovo Seargeants Give Their Boys Surprise Puppies

Here's the link.

The picture above is the two puppies before the family got there.

A husband and wife who are Sergeants in the National Guard recently returned from Kosovo. The father saw a litter of 8 lab puppies on petfinder @ the Stover Animal Shelter and emailed them about keeping two of the puppies for their boys, who are 10, 6, and 5. The boys had NO idea what was going on when they went to Stover. It's all in the article. This animal shelter is my pet charity, pun intended. Carol Sue Wiegel mentioned in the article is the local real estate agent and her primary volunteer is one of my oldest friends, Brenda Cook, she emailed this to me:

About 2 months ago a army guy e-mailed us from Kosovo. He had seen our pets on petfinder, and was interested in some lab pups we had ( 8 ) of them. He has 3 little boys and had promised them a dog when he returned, he really wanted 2 of them but wanted us to keep 2 for him for 2 months until he returned. Well of course we did and he got home last Tuesday, and came for the pups this Monday, his boys new nothing about this, it was a surprise for them. He brought his family down and you should of seen the look on those kids faces they are 10, 7 and 5, they went crazy!! they named thier dogs Scarlett and Duke. The Sedalia paper was there and so was KRCG tv Jefferson City. Great Press and did a good thing too!

I LOVE stories like this.

300 Dogs Rescued From North Carolina Puppy Mill

Three hundred dogs were rescued Friday from a puppy mill in North Carolina. The dogs were mainly Lhasa Apso, Shih-Tzus and Chihuahuas.
The link is here to the complete story.
The animals were housed in unheated unventilated outbuildings without proper medical care or socialization.
Being an animal lover and perhaps letting my animals run a little too freely I just can't understand how people can treat dogs like this.
If you have room in your heart and home for a dog please consider adopting a rescue dog.

Visit Small Paws Rescue, Spunky and Grace

Don't these look like poodles? Well they aren't, they are bichons. The main difference is poodles are sometimes not as rough and tumble as bichons. Bichons LOVE to rough and tumble, they blitz which is another word for running around like they are nuts, you can imagine them saying I am soooo fast, I am the fastest dog in the world, I will stop and touch you (or the couch or the kitten or another dog) but I am just so faaaaast, watch me go, I can even run sideways on the back of the couch for short distances I am MAGIC!! And above all I am faster than the rest of you!! Or @ least that's what mine seems to be saying.
These Bichon Frieses are on the website Small Paws Before and After, I can't go there very often because I will break down and cry. It's a wonderful organization and a wonderful site, take a look and read the heart wrenching stories. Grace was marked Dead on her cage and Spunky was given up by his master because presumably the new bride didn't like him. Check out Small Paws Before and After. Do what your heart tells you to do. And BTW bichons ARE supposed to be harder to train than poodles but they are not dumb. Mine knows by how I dress and whether I get my travel mug out of the dishwasher whether I'm going to work or taking him with. He also knows cheese and cat and bed and we have to spell LOTS of words.
Also mine hates cats, after the 3rd set of rescued kittens I've adopted this summer he's reconciled himself to they might not be so bad, he stops @ letting them snuzzle when he sleeps too much but they do play with him, bat the dog, chase the cat 2 feet, bat the dog, etc. They can be taught very easily, OK they can be spoiled more easily but for a companion dog they can't be beat.
